I’ve discovered that as I ‘mature,’ a rather unwelcome companion has joined me: procrastination. I never had a problem with it before, but now it’s my constant shadow. My brain is hijacked by thoughts like, “What can I do instead?” and before I know it, I’m knee-deep in a trivial distraction instead of making progress to get stuff done. For someone who’s always been disciplined, focused, and driven, this new behaviour is maddening, especially since I’ve become a master at it.
Honestly, all procrastination has done is leave me in a state of constant frustration—a mental tug-of-war where, on one side, I yearn to make personal and professional progress, but on the other, an invisible force keeps hurling distractions in my direction.
Enter GSD. For those not in the know, GSD stands for Get Stuff Done. Sometimes, if I’m feeling cheeky, I replace the “S” with a spicier word, cranking up my determination and unlocking my inner badassery. Now, there is one caveat: if you’re prone to procrastination, GSD is not something you achieve on your own.
There’s something magical about being surrounded by people who are in the same boat, sharing that collective energy to move past procrastination and start getting stuff done. It’s like a team huddle with a supportive crew who’ll celebrate your wins, no matter how small, and help you shake off setbacks. The unspoken accountability keeps you focused, and the shared laughter keeps things light, proving that getting stuff done can actually be fun. So while procrastination is out there trying to derail you, GSD allows you to tackle what needs to get done with more joy and less dread.
Personally, these sessions are pure gold. I’m fortunate to be part of a fabulous community called Women Aloud—a multi-talented tribe that gets together for book club, events, intriguing speakers, mindfulness, mental fitness—you name it, it’s covered! It’s like a buffet of perspectives, offering endless opportunities for connection, learning, and growth. Best of all, Women Aloud hosts regular get stuff done sessions.
At first, I thought ‘get stuff done’ would be all about moving my business forward—getting clients, writing content, the usual grind. But GSD is so much more. Some days, my get stuff done sessions are all business, and I don’t leave my home office until the hour is up. Other days, it’s all about tackling the less desirable tasks—the ironing, defrosting the freezer, and the notorious “cancel contact lens subscription,” an item that’s been sitting on my to-do list for weeks. “How petty is that?” you might wonder. “Such a simple task. I’d never admit to putting that off.” But during our last get stuff done session, I found a kindred spirit in the same predicament—a fellow procrastinator who dreads that telephone holding pattern as much as I do. Suddenly, I wasn’t alone. We laughed about it, shared our frustrations, and tackled the issue within 10 minutes of GSD magic. A noteable win.
Get stuff done sessions offer a rare opportunity to focus on those tasks that tend to slip through the cracks. They provide an hour or two to not only reclaim control but to feel the sense of achievement that goes with it. In a world where every minute counts, finding a space that understands and uplifts you is worth every cent.
Do you have someone who can keep you accountable? A group of friends who can rally together for a regular get stuff done session or even a virtual accountability check-in? Being a GSD convert, I now have the tools to help anyone who is feeling stuck. One coaching session could be all you need to move from procrastination to that feeling of achievement.
